Coronavirus Update #13

Dear patients,

Please see below for a few updates regarding COVID immunizations which have been released over the previous few weeks:

  1. Beginning June 28th all residents who received their first dose will be eligible to reschedule their second dose to an earlier date according to the minimum interval, the minimum interval at this time is 28 days. You can rebook by following this link.

  2. Individuals who received the AstraZeneca vaccine as their first dose will continue to receive an 8+ week interval. You may choose whether or not you wish to have the AZ vaccine or an mRNA vaccine. NACI has released that early evidence suggests an mRNA vaccine as your second dose may provide broader protection.

  3. The mRNA vaccines are considered interchangeable. A single dose is ~36% effective on average vs. 88% effectiveness with two doses; therefore delaying your second dose is not recommended and increases your risk of more severe illness should you become infected. There have been some delays in Pfizer shipments therefore you may be offered a Moderna vaccine in it’s place for a second dose if you are aged 18+. Patients aged 12-17 will continue to be offered Pfizer.

  4. Public Health has release some information regarding the reports of myocarditis and pericarditis following mRNA vaccination

    • Please see this link to read through the information for yourself or read below for a summary:

      • Currently reported cases are not higher than would be expected in the general population therefore no clear link has been established at this time but it continues to be under investigation

      • From the cases that have occurred - it is more common in males, more common following the second dose, more common following moderna compared to pfizer, more common in teens & young adults and most cases are mild and resolve with conservative treatment including anti-inflammatories and rest

      • If you experience chest pain or pressure, irregular heartbeats, or shortness of breathing within the week following your immunization you should contact your healthcare provider for further investigation
